Working in close partnership with the President and in collaboration with the senior leadership team and Board of Trustees, the Vice President for Development will be responsible for implementing, leading, and executing an ambitious development strategy for Barnard, including the completion of The Bold Standard: A Campaign for Barnard. The Vice President will head Barnard’s development team, ensuring that the resources of the department are optimally deployed and aligned with the aspirations of the College. In addition, s/he will work closely with alumnae and institutional and individual donors, building relationships that will help Barnard fulfill its mission now and in the future.

Position Summary Information

Essential Duties Summary

● Provide the strategic vision, leadership, and expertise required to take Barnard’s development program to the next level of achievement.
● Set fundraising goals and develop, lead, and execute programs to maximize philanthropic support for College priorities. Ensure success of the College’s overall fundraising efforts, including completion of the current capital campaign.
● Manage a portfolio of top prospective and current donors who have the capacity to give seven- and eight-figure gifts to the College. Apply current best practices to all development activities.
● Collaborate with the President and Development Committee of the Board of Trustees to plan and implement a long-term development strategy for Barnard.
● Accompany the President, trustees, and others on cultivation and solicitation visits.
● Oversee efforts with leadership, faculty, and staff to translate Barnard initiatives into persuasive proposals and compelling gift/grant opportunities.
● Work with the Provost, Dean, faculty, and senior leadership to maximize their engagement in development.
● Provide guidance and support to the Alumnae Relations staff and Alumnae Association leadership; manage the College’s relationships with its alumnae base and participate in alumni activities and events, as appropriate.
● Assess the department’s current strengths and weaknesses; make recommendations for the enhancement of the current structure/team.
● Recruit, train, manage, and mentor a team of professionals and support staff to increase philanthropic support and alumnae involvement with Barnard.
● Manage and administer the departmental budget.
● Support the trustees and President in recruiting new board members.
● Work with the Public Affairs team to develop communications strategies and advance the Barnard brand.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required Qualification Summary

● A demonstrated track record of accomplishment as a successful front-line principal/major gift fundraiser, including the identification, solicitation, and stewardship of high-capacity donors.
● History of working in close partnership with senior leadership and trustees on major philanthropic initiatives, including capital campaigns.
● Demonstrated ability to construct and manage high-performing teams by setting challenging goals, motivating others to excel, and providing mentorship and support.
● Experience working in a prestigious academic, cultural, or other nonprofit organization with a sophisticated donor base.
● Flexibility and adaptability to new programs in an emerging and changing environment.
● Maturity, presence, and gravitas to work effectively with all constituencies, including alumnae, trustees, and donors.
● Willingness and capacity to serve as a contributing member of the senior leadership team.
● Ability to forge a collaborative relationship with the President and to serve as a trusted advisor.
● An authentic appreciation for the College’s mission, history, and future.
● Intelligence, wisdom, and superb judgment.
